Human society has used monetary systems as a medium of exchange and store of value for millennia. Information technology provides the opportunity to create fundamentally new instruments of economic scarcity that are based on any arbitrary element of information. These information currencies will enable the application of new economic mechanisms for information management and valuation.

Information certification for the creation of instruments of economic scarcity integrates naturally with digital library systems. The first implementation of information currency systems is a modification to the Fedora digital object repository.
